Region 5 Proposed Bus Service Changes

What are the key parts of the proposed new bus network?

Improved links to major and town centres

Research has revealed that customers prefer direct services to centres that provide access to train stations, department stores, specialty shops, cinemas, restaurants, schools, government administration and office employment. These types of centres are called Regional Cities, Major Centres and Town Centres under the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney. The Major Centres are Burwood, Bankstown and Hurstville.

A simplified network

Around the world, customers have indicated they prefer networks that are easy to understand. The existing network is complicated due to variations on routes that depend on the time of day. The proposed new network would reduce diversions and variations so it could operate the same routes across the week, where possible.

More direct services

A common complaint about bus services is about circuitous routes. The proposed network would be less circuitous as routes would be straightened to ensure that services are direct, but retain important links to local facilities, where possible.

Integrated services

Integrated services simply means that services link with other bus routes and other modes of transport. We use primary routes and secondary routes to create this integration. Primary routes travel back and forth between the Regional Cities and Major Centres on main roads. Secondary routes collect people from surrounding locations and take them to either the primary route or directly to other services, modes of transport or Town Centres.

More travel opportunities

The proposed network has been designed to increase the number and variety of public transport options available, by anchoring to a Regional City, Major or Town Centre and ensuring that as many local destinations are included in the network.

School services

Dedicated school buses will be assessed following this proposal. School Principals will be consulted on any changes to bus services that impact school children.
